What to Do If You are Still Pooping Morning of Colonoscopy?
If you are still pooping the morning of the colonoscopy, don’t hesitate to call your doctor or visit the medical care team to tell the whole situation.
Your doctor will take a brief history of the dietary routine you followed and inquire about colonoscopy prep.
Just do tell all the facts clearly.
If your appointment is at mid-day or late afternoon, your doctor can advise taking more clear liquids and wait for the results.
But if your procedure is early and you are still pooping the morning of the colonoscopy, you will get a new appointment.
Before preparing for a new appointment, you must know the reasons behind this delay.
The very first reason is your careless diet plan.
You must be taking a heavy meal during the last few days.
You may also poop the morning of the colonoscopy if you skipped oral prep or took it at the wrong time.
So, these minor yet significant mistakes are the cause of this interruption.
But don’t lose hope as colonoscopy is here to save your life, and it is worth to work on the complete colonoscopy preparation.

Colonoscopy Prep Checklist
Colonoscopy preparation is easy and fruitful only when you are extra careful.
Diet and bowel cleansing solution are the two main parts of the colonoscopy prep (1). If you don’t know the key points of prep, you might not have a successful procedure.
Here I’m sharing a checklist of colonoscopy prep to ease your procedure, and when all the mentioned steps are followed, it leads to rewarding prep.
Food
When preparing for a colonoscopy, take only soft food that is light for the body and expels easily (2).
The reason for selective food is to prepare your colon for the procedure.
First of all, divide your food plan as per the days left in your procedure.

3 Days Before Colonoscopy
An important thing to do three days before a colonoscopy is to stop taking fiber supplements, as they make your intestine heavy with a large number of feces.
When there is more fecal material, you will still poop the morning of the colonoscopy.
So, exclude fiber supplement products from your daily routine.
The next is to take soft and easy-to-digest food.
You can take light and healthy food but avoid taking foods such as nuts, grains, fruits with seeds, frozen legumes, fried or fatty food.
Foods you can take 3 days before colonoscopy are:
- Ripe fruits without skin or seeds
- Well cooked vegetables
- Eggs
- Fish
- Well cooked meat or poultry
- Bread
- Bagels
- Cereals
- Crackers
- Rice
- Pasta
- Smooth butter
- Custard
- Low-fat dairy products
- Snacks
- Popsicles
- Soft drinks
- Tea
- Coffee
- Plain gravies
- Cake
- Puddings/desserts
1 Day before Colonoscopy
A day before a colonoscopy is very important for colonoscopy preparation, so drink as much liquid as you can.
The liquid will prevent the formation of more fecal material and ensure a clear colon.
That is why do not take any solid food and also avoid any colored drinks with red, purple, orange, or any other food dye.
Drinks you can take a day before colonoscopy are:
- Water
- Chicken, beef, or vegetable broth
- Soda
- Soft drinks
- Tea or coffee without cream or milk
- Fruit juice without pulp
- Strained vegetable juice

Procedure Day
Just like the day before colonoscopy, continue drinking only clear liquids.
Drinking plain water is the best among all.
But beware of the fact that you cannot take anything, even the liquid, 2 hours before the colonoscopy (3).
So, if your procedure is scheduled at 11 am, you must stop drinking anything by 9 am.
Colonoscopy Prep Laxative
The colonoscopy prep laxatives soften the stool and help smoothly pass through your body.
These osmotic laxatives draw water from the large intestine to the stool, making it easier to pass.
So, you cannot say NO to this undesirable drink.
There are different types of prep solutions depending on your medical history or body need.
When making this prep, make sure to read all the detailed guidelines given on the label as they vary from brand to brand.
To take your bowel prep solutions, following three ways can be practiced.
Further, you may find the best way of taking a bowel cleansing prep after reading these steps.
Day Before Plan
On the day before the plan, you take the entire bowel prep solution in the evening before the procedure.
For example, your appointment is on Monday morning, and you have to take the prep on Sunday evening.
Same Day Plan
For the same-day colonoscopy prep laxative plan, you take the oral solution on the very same day of your procedure.
It is usually at mid-day or late afternoon procedures.
For example, your procedure is on Monday at 4 pm, so you have to take the prep on the same day early in the morning.
Split Dose Plan
In a split-dose colonoscopy prep plan, you take the solutions in two rounds (4).
First, in the late afternoon or evening before the procedure, and second dose right 5 hours before the colonoscopy.
For example, if your colonoscopy appointment is on Monday at 10 am, you have to take the first dose on Sunday evening and the second dose on Monday at 5 am.
So, without any doubt, split-dose laxatives are far more effective than other plans and helps to prepare your colon.
You can divide your prep like this and prepare yourself to the fullest.
With a split dose, your colon empties gradually, and chances of poop diminish.

But, despite these split doses, laxatives are unpleasant and hard to be taken into the body
You may feel vomiting or nausea, so you must know how to avoid vomiting during colonoscopy prep.
You can practice when drinking your prep, and these tips will ease your prep intake.
- Take chilled prep with a straw to overcome its bitter experience.
- Drink slow!
- You can suck a lemon or hard candy between drinking glasses of the solution to help clear the aftertaste.
- Don’t try to take one dose in a single go. Just keep the solution in the refrigerator and take a glass every 15 minutes.

I did all this. On top of the 2 dosing. For me every time I still use the restroom up to my appointment. Not solids or softies but clear liquids. No mention this could happen but does. It’s unfortunate because you are afraid to poop on the drs or on your way to your appointment. It’s normal though lol

Hi. I know you must be frustrated but hang in there!
The body’s response can vary among individuals to the colonoscopy prep.
You can take an additional laxative on your doctor’s advice. Or you can try splitting your prep and drinking half of it before the night of the colonoscopy and the other half on the morning of the procedure.
I hope it works for you this time. Would love to hear back from you.

I took the prep exactly the way my doctor ordered. The first day. Pooped almost immediately but only 2 iMessage. Now the morning of the colonoscopy i took the prep at 8:00 and its now 10:00 and nothing has happened. Will i be ok today? I am nervous

Most people experience the first bowel movement two to three hours after taking the prep, but it may take longer. If you haven’t gone to the bathroom after drinking your prep and it’s been three hours, you may need to take an additional laxative.
It is unusual, but possible, to have no bowel movement after colonoscopy preparation.
If you have followed all of the necessary preemptive measures, including drinking the entire prep, you should consult your doctor.
